Christ Our King

Reflection: Christ Our King

John 12:12-16

12 The next day the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. 13 They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the king of Israel!” 14 Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, as it is written: 15 “Do not be afraid, Daughter Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” 16 At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.

Today is Palm Sunday, a time when we celebrate a similarly grand entrance by Christ into Jerusalem. We remember how Jesus came to His people at the beginning of Holy Week. Accordingly, we, like the Jews in the city, should exude the same awe and reverence for our Lord. The Holy One from God who came in humbleness and majesty, as He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The people spread palm branches and their clothes out of him, and shouted “Hosanna, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.” They rejoiced at His arrival and took on an attitude of worship at His appearance. This is how we should remember and celebrate the message and meaning of Palm Sunday.

Reflection Questions:

Please read and think about each question as it applies to your Christian journey with Christ.
  • What does “Jesus is King” mean to you? How does this truth manifest itself in your life?
  • What are some of the ways in which we can celebrate the meaning of Palm Sunday? How does today prepare you for Holy Week and Easter?

Prayer:

Lord, help us to always remember that Jesus is king, and let us worship our Lord not only in words but with our actions, indeed our very lives. Give us a renewed appreciation for the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Motivate us to be better servants for Him. In Jesus name, Amen.
