The Christian Life

Reflection: The Christian Life

Philippians 3:17-21; 4:1

17 Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame.Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. 4 1Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends!

In order to gain a fresh perspective on our faith journeys, especially during this Lent season, we need to simply come to God, with a desire and commitment to serve, love, and live in the way Christ showed us. We need to be open to the many ways by which God will use us in this world, and focusing on that will give us a renewed perspective on what the Christian life is all about. Again, Lent is the perfect time to refocus. It’s the perfect opportunity to be introspective, to look inwardly at who we are, sinful human beings. It’s also a time to be outwardly focused, a time to pray, fast, and to worship God, remembering who God is, and how much we need His forgiveness and mercy. So with these thoughts in mind, let’s turn to our Scripture verses from the book of Philippians and learn more about the Christian life and our Christian journeys.

Reflection Questions:

Please read and think about each question as it applies to your Christian journey with Christ.
  • What is the Christian life all about? What do you feel is God’s calling for your life?
  • Who are your role models, the people who’ve inspired you to live for Christ? In what ways have you been a role model to others?
  • What does it mean to “hold firmly” to your faith?

Lord, allow us to understand what Lent is all about. Thank you for the good Christian examples you’ve provided through the people we meet, and through your Holy Word. Give us a renewed perspective on what it means to live for you, and let us hold firmly to our faith, so we can become people who please you and glorify your name. Amen.

Across the Connection

I realize that immigration is a contentious issue in our country and in our churches. The folks that I am talking about in this article are coming through the legal process. They have been detained by ICE, checked out, and entered into our legal system to become legal refugees. These people have sponsors who will care for them and a court date that has been assigned to them. In Tucson, our Desert Southwest Conference was approached by ICE and at their request, our conference set up a shelter that temporarily houses people who have been released from detention and are on their way to sponsors in other parts of the country. This shelter ministry became The Inn.

There is an urgent need to provide the same kind of hospitality in the metropolitan Phoenix area.
When the weather turns warmer and the grass grows greener, it’s easier to understand the promise of new life and renewed hope that Christians proclaim as “Easter people.” The reminders are all around us so be sure to keep an eye out on your next spring stroll.
