A voice is crying out:
“Clear the Lord’s way in the desert!
Make a level highway in the wilderness for our God!
Every valley will be raised up,
and every mountain and hill will be flattened.
Uneven ground will become level,
and rough terrain a valley plain.
The Lord’s glory will appear,
and all humanity will see it together;
the Lord’s mouth has commanded it.”
Isaiah 40:3-5, CEB

While preparing for Christmas, many of us move things around to make room.
The furniture is rearranged to make a place for the Christmas tree. Knick-knacks on a hearth or living room table are cleared to accommodate the nativity set. Wall hangings are shuffled to provide a spot to display the Christmas cards we receive.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us

Reflections: "God's Gift"

John 3:16

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

The most famous verse in the Bible speaks of God’s love. As we wind down the Advent and Christmas season, we end by focusing on the amazing gift of God’s love, personified by Jesus’ birth in the manger. This was and is the answer to the prayers of so many believers, and today we know God’s love through the life, ministry, and mission of our Lord and Savior. How appropriate that we end this season by learning about God’s love, specifically how to love others as God loved us.

Reflection Questions:

Please read and think about each question as it applies to your Christian journey with Christ.
  • What do you believe is the connection between God’s love and evangelism? How do we spread the message of God’s love?
  • What are some ways you have felt God’s love this year, and helped spread God’s love for others?

Father, as we end the Advent and Christmas season, help us apply the lessons of hope, peace, joy, and love to our Christian walks. May we strive to become better servants as we learn more about your incredible love for us, and may we rely on your love to strengthen and guide us during life’s difficult storms. Amen.

Across the Connection

The Christmas Conference: 10 Days That Started A Church

For many of us, Christmas morning means lounging in our pajamas, eating delicious food and slowly opening gifts. For those who started the Methodist church in America, their Christmas Eve in 1784 was the first of ten days of serious church business. In the end, their gift to us was the formation of a new denomination that would change history.

When Thomas Coke bumped into Francis Asbury after a worship service at Barratt’s Chapel in Frederica, Delaware, he shared important news. John Wesley had sent him to ordain Asbury and appoint him superintendent of a new, Methodist church in the United States.

Rethinking Christmas Tradition

We know the stories in the Bible, attend Advent and Christmas Eve worship each year, listen to tons of Christmas carols, and have seen just about every Christmas movie and special. We United Methodists know a lot about Christmas, but like most things, there is always more to learn. Here are a few lesser-known tidbits.
