Scripture for the Week

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Isaiah 40:28-31 NIV

Turn Away

Reflection: Turn Away From Sin

Galatians 5:16-21

16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

As we move forward in the Lent season, a time when we focus our hearts and minds on God, let’s remind ourselves of how we are to fight against sin. Although sin is an ever-present reality in this world, as believers we must do our very best to live lives that are pleasing to God. We must, as the Apostle Paul reminds us, walk by the Spirit and avoid the things that are of the flesh. This means we are led by the Spirit’s calling, and we conform ourselves to be better than we are now. Let’s remember to be penitent, humble, and eager to please our Lord by the way we resist sin.

Reflection Questions:

Please read and think about each question as it applies to your Christian journey with Christ.
  • What is your understanding of sin? How do you resist sin in your Christian journey?
  • What does it mean to walk by the Spirit? How has the Spirit of God led and helped you in your battle against sin?

Heavenly Father, give us the strength to resist sin, and a mind that understands what you want from us. Let us be testimonies to your love and grace, and in your mercy, forgive us when we sin so that we can become renewed and motivated once more to live for you. In Jesus name, Amen.
